The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek review
What is this book about?
Another southern novel delight like our past read, "Where the Crawdads Sing", The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is inspired by the true story of the blue-skinned people of Kentucky in the Appalachian mountains. Set in the 1930s where the populace lives in poverty, men work to their deaths in coal mines and books are scarce. History and historical fiction are woven into this story as we read about our blue-skinned heroine, Cussy Mary aka 'Bluet'. Cussy Mary's desire above all else is to work as a packhorse Librarian to bring knowledge and escape through books to the people spread out among the hills. As she deals with a father who endlessly looks for a suitor for her, prejudice among her colleagues and even the townsfolk who thinks she below human there is still love to be found and her job that she will never give up.
What did the book club think?
We liked the long list of complex characters and the raw courage Cussy had. There were some surprises in the end and intense dramatic moments but overall the majority said it was a fast read and would be a great book to read for the summer. The information at the end of the novel given by the author on the history and medical condition of the blue-skinned people and images of the packhorse Librarians was enlightening. A reading group guide also included comes in handy when you need help to keep the discussion going. As described by another book critic on the front of it's beautiful cover, "It is an 'unputdownable' work". Enjoy fellow readers!
