New and improved holiday gift exchange idea for your book club
This past Christmas my book club came up with a new reading plan for 2019. Instead of our traditional choosing a book through Pinterest boards, or voting on a few choice books we came up with a fun bookish idea to pick all of our reads for the whole year.
Could that be possible? Have all of our reads ready for the year? It's an experiment that I can't wait to share with my fellow readers and it's not too late to try this for your own group so let's begin! How to start: Have everyone bring a new or gently used wrapped novel that they think would make a good read this year. It's okay if you've already read the book (not in book club of course) but try and bring a book that you have never read before but are excited to share. One more thing: It doesn't matter the size of your group for this reading plan. If you have less then 8 book friends in your group than you will have to choose more novels later on if you meet more than eight times a year. If you have more than 12 books than just choose or 'vote in' which books you would like to read based on how many times you meet. *Any books that were not chosen out of the stack keep them as overflow for the following year. Building your book club TBR - to be read - list! The book exchange game
Place the wrapped books on a table. Have slips of paper with a number (based on how many in your group) to be picked from a bowl and pass it around so that everyone gets a number. Number one goes first and takes a wrapped book from the stack. Unwrap that book and hold onto it (there's always room for lively discussion when the novel is unwrapped!). Then number two goes next and that person can either steal number one's book or take a new wrapped book on the table. To keep the rules simple there are only two steals allowed and then the new owner of the 'popular book title' is safe.
Once all the novels have been unwrapped and that part of the game is over, next is the time to discuss which book out of the stack will be your first read for the new year or whoever is hosting the next book club let them choose! *Don't forget to keep track of all your new titles and email out the list. Let's hope in your new reading plan you will have a classic, biography, new fiction, historical fiction or debut novels to choose from. When it comes time for the holiday reads you can defer from your reading plan and choose your Halloween and Christmas reads. This is a new exciting way to create a reading plan and shake things up in your group so get started!
Our first novel from our book exchange is a new release memoir
and bestseller Educated A Memoir by Tara Westover
No matter what reading path you choose here's to another new year of some of the best reading. Cheers to us book friends!
