“If this nation is to be wise as well as strong, if we are to achieve our destiny, then we need more new ideas for more wise men reading more good books in more public libraries. These libraries should be open to all - except the censor. We must know all the facts and hear all the alternatives and listen to all the criticisms. Let us welcome controversial books and controversial authors. For the Bill of Rights is the guardian of our security as well as our liberty." - John F Kennedy
John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the second and third presidents of the United States rarely agreed on anything together but books and ideas. Adam's on reading, “I read my eyes out and can't read half enough...the more one reads the more one sees we have to read.” Jefferson - "I cannot live without books; but fewer will suffice where amusement, and not use, is the only future object." Courageous WWII reads
For WWII buffs these are a must read! Unbroken was a book club favorite and comes highly recommended. Read the amazing story of Louis Zamperini from his troubled childhood, an Olympic athlete, American soldier, POW and life after the war. This is one biography that should not to be missed!
The group of extraordinary WWII soldiers, Band of Brothers is the story of the brave, heroic men that stood by each other and fought for freedom until the end. The amazing Band of Brothers series available on Amazon Prime Video The best of the past reads
.A best seller, The Wright Brothers by author David McCullough, is an 'enjoyable - fast paced' biography of Wilbur and Orville Wright's courage and determination to be the first inventors of the flying machine even if it means their death.
It's 1914 and Ernest Shackleton, the polar explorer, and his crew of 27 find themselves with more than they bargained for in their exploration of Antarctica. A ship that is stuck in immovable ice and dwindling supplies. Check out Endurance a nail biting icy adventure! My favorite quote by Fredrick Douglass, "Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." Douglass an escaped slave, learned to read and became a famous orator, abolitionist, writer and statesman. The story of his life here: Fredrick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom Dads, Book Club and Poker?
Bring your book, don't forget the beer and snacks and let's play book club poker! Men may not typically get together and have a three hour plus book discussions but they may like the idea of combining a good read while doing something they love and that's a card game.
During my own personal polling of guy friends that is exactly what my research has revealed. Men don't want a lengthy book talk (not all anyway) just casual chill time to talk about their latest read and doing something else at the same time. Keep it simple with one foot in the book world and another playing a card game. Before the card game have a quick talk on the novel, share some inside thoughts and off to play! It's a win win.
